A New Zealand study published today in the journalJournal of Clinical Internal Medicineconfirms that sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is safe and effective in men who have erectile dysfunction.
The researchers, from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, conducted a pilot study to see if the drug sildenafil was as effective as the older Viagra, but had some side effects.
The study, presented today in, compared the effectiveness of sildenafil and Viagra with Viagra and placebo pills, and concluded that both sildenafil and Viagra have some benefits in men who have erectile dysfunction.
The research was funded by the Research and Development Committee (RC). It was also supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Dr Sarah Thompson, of the University of Auckland, said: “I am very pleased with the results of this pilot study. The results of this study provide important new information on the efficacy and safety of sildenafil in men with erectile dysfunction. This pilot study also demonstrates that sildenafil is safe and effective for use in treating erectile dysfunction in men who have erectile dysfunction.
“While Viagra is an effective medication for treating erectile dysfunction, the study findings suggest that sildenafil may be more effective than Viagra in treating erectile dysfunction.
“Our results from this pilot study provide important new information on the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil in men with erectile dysfunction, as well as the potential to treat other medical conditions.”
The study was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is published in the journal. The results of the study have been presented in the journalby Dr Sarah Thompson and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in collaboration with a review of the preliminary findings from the pilot study.
